St Cuthbert

St Cuthbert’s is the Catholic Church in Chester-Le-Street

Chester-le-Street is now mainly a commuter town, though also noted for its international cricket ground, but it was once the administrative and ecclesiastical centre of County Durham and beyond. The incorrupt body of St. Cuthbert of Lindisfarne was enshrined here for 112 years during which the time the very first English translation of the gospels was made in the famous Lindisfarne Gospels.

The town today has a population of about 24,000 with perhaps another 10,000 people living in surrounding areas of the parish such as Pelton, Lumley and Waldridge. The Catholic population is about 3000 and our weekly Mass attendance is in the top 10% of our diocese of Hexham and Newcastle. We are also fortunate to celebrate a good number of weddings and baptisms each year.

We are an active parish with many religious, social and charitable activities going on year round. Please take time to explore our website. If you are new to the parish please do introduce yourself and pay especial attention to the section on how to get involved!
