School

There has been a school in St. Cuthbert’s parish almost as long as there has been a parish, even before the church was built. The school was originally based in Lumley Terrace in what is now the church hall until the “new” school opened on its current site next to the church in 1927.

Our school motto is ‘Excellence through Challenge and Opportunity’ and it strives to give every the child the opportunity to develop their full potential and to be the best they can be. The school has a dedicated team of teaching and support staff and committed and challenging Governing Body, the majority of which is made up of “Foundation Governors” who are normally parishioners appointed on behalf of our bishop. It also has a very active and successful parents association called PALS.

We are fortunate that the children join us frequently for Mass and other services, sometimes as a whole school, in key stages or as individual classes. In line with diocesan guidelines the school also plays an important role alongside parents and parish catechists in preparing our children to receive the sacraments most especially for First Confession and First Holy Communion.
